What does an Arborist do?
An Arborist is an expert in the field of arboriculture. Arboriculture is the study of trees, and other woody plants
as well as their cultivation and management. However, rather than forest management, Arborists (or
Arboriculturists) typically center their attention on that of the health and safety of trees and/or plants. This
distinguishes the Arborist from a Forester or a Logger, though they are somewhat related fields.
It is common to think that an Arborist is one who climbs trees. However, not all Arborists climb. Many Arborists
utilize rope techniques to scale a tree. If a tree is going to be removed, an Arborist may use spikes to climb the
tree. This must be done with care as spikes do cause damage to trees and should not be used on healthy
trees that are not being cut down.
An professional Arborist is skilled at doing many things. Their skills are not limited to tree pruning and tree
removal. An Arborist has the ability to diagnose and treat diseases, provide tree structural support and
transplanting and install lightning protection. Arborists can climb trees to provide proper evaluation and may
use such equipment as cranes and lifts. Not all Arborists are the same. There are several certifications
available to Arborists that train them to perform specific functions and tasks. Some Arborists strictly do
consulting while others do everything from planting to pruning.
